The nation was introduced to Don Haskins in a movie about the man who had the nerve to field an all black basketball team from a little tiny college in El Paso and then win a national championship with the team. His policy of putting the best 5 players on the floor, no matter who they were, was ground-breaking in college basketball. However, as Demon basketball fans know, it was not new to him. Though Haskins led the Demon roundballers only one year (1960-61), that year the team went to the State 3A Basketball Tournament, placing 4th in the state. The next year, the team with several of those same players, won the State 3A Basketball Championship. Though his time as a Dumas Demon was brief, Don Haskins made a difference in the lives of young men and women at Dumas High School.
