Mert Keeney is truly a life-long Dumas Demon. He graduated from DHS in 1945 and attended West Texas State University on a basketball scholarship. His education and his married life with Freda (Thompson) were interrupted by the Korean Conflict, where he served his country in the US Army. Eventually Mert and Freda relocated to their family back in Dumas and Keeney became Dumas’ first Certified Public Accountant. As he went about growing his family and his business, Mert was actively involved in the growth and development of DISD. After being instrumental in starting the YMCA and raising the funds to build the current building, he worked to bring the Moore County campus of Amarillo College to Dumas so that no student would miss an opportunity to take college classes or receive post high school training. He worked with the Beth Salem to organize the Dumas Education Foundation and served on its first board of directors. Mert Keeney has prepared a lasting legacy to our community, our school, and our past, present, future citizens.
