Glenn Bonner Class of 1968 Wall of Honor
As a sophomore, Glenn started at quarterback and in the defensive backfield in the old Dumas Demon stadium, located at the Junior High. In his first varsity game, he intercepted three passes, running one back for a 79-yard touchdown. In the 1965 season at quarterback, Glenn had 23 pass completions out of 61 attempts for 460 yards. He also carried the ball 39 times for 160 yards. He scored 6 touchdowns, 4 on offense and 2 on defense. The Demons finished that year with 11 wins against a single loss, that coming in the State Quarterfinals against Brownwood, losing 7-6.
For his junior year, Glenn was the starting quarterback in the first game here in Dumas Demon Stadium. In 1966 Glenn completed 45 passes for 691 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also ran the ball 73 times for 295 yards and four more touchdowns. The Demons finished the season with 9 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. They lost the bi-district game on penetrations as they tied Monahans 6-6. Glenn was named the first team All-district quarterback by the district 1-3A coaches.
Coming into his senior year, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine said of Bonner: “He is part of the backfield class returning to lead Dumas into the 1967 season.” For his senior year, Glenn connected on 56 passes for 705 yards and 7 touchdowns. He rushed the ball 84 times for 407 yards. He was named all district quarterback and defensive back; and he was a member of the class three A all-state backfield.
Glenn also holds the distinction of being the first Dumas quarterback to throw a touchdown pass in this Dumas Demon stadium.
At the end of his senior season, the Moore County News Press said this of Glenn: “Bonner will long be remembered in Dumas for his passing arm that made him one of the top quarterbacks in the history of Dumas.” Glenn also played on the basketball and baseball teams. And he was a member of the National Honor Society.
Glenn signed a letter of intent to play football with Oklahoma State. He played for four years and then graduated with a degree in Marketing in 1972. He then began a career in banking; and, after 40 years, retired in 2015.
Glenn and his wife Kris have been married for fifty-five years. They have two children and now four grandchildren; and are enjoying retirement in northeast Oklahoma.
Glenn writes that all of his favorite memories revolve around the relationships and friendships with his teammates. He also recalls that playing football in Dumas came with high expectations and remembers a Dumas community that was extremely supportive. And finally, Bonner said: “I loved my years in Dumas and am very proud to have been a Dumas Demon football player.” And tonight, we are more than proud to place Glenn Bonner, from the class of 1968, onto our Dumas Demon stadium’s wall of honor.
