Twas the night before testing, all through the school,
Not a soul was stirring, the air calm and cool.
The Chromebooks were charged with utmost care,
In hopes that success soon would be there.
The children, in slumber, dreams filled their heads,
Of equations and passages, as they lay in their beds.
Then out on the roof, there arose such a sound,
Awakening them all, their curiosity unbound.
To the window they rushed, their eyes wide with surprise,
As the STAAR fairy appeared before their eyes.
With a wand in her hand, she spoke words of might,
Guiding them through concepts, shining bright as a light.
Author’s purpose, main idea, and inference so clear,
She taught them with magic, dispelling any fear.
Perimeters, decimals, and word problems they knew,
Reducing fractions and strategies anew.
With a smile, she left them, her wisdom profound,
"Believe in yourselves," was her last resounding sound.
For tomorrow awaits, a challenge, a test,
But armed with their knowledge, they'll give it their best.
So sleep now, young scholars, for tomorrow will show,
Your hard work and effort, how far you will grow.
For the STAAR is just one step on your quest,
To greatness and triumph, you'll surely attest!

Congratulations!
Dumas Intermediate on being a CREST Leadership Award Winner
In 2005, Texas School Counselor Association began a program called CREST to recognize schools with outstanding counseling programs. Schools receiving CREST awards have demonstrated a commitment using the Texas Model to improve the lives and achievement of students in academic, career, and personal social domains. The Texas School Counseling Association is proud to announce CREST winners for the 2023-2024 school year.
CREST is a continuous improvement document that gives a school counseling program an opportunity to demonstrate effective communication and a commitment to obtaining results. CREST helps counselors to evaluate their counseling programs, promote their programs to the stakeholders in their districts, demonstrate the effectiveness of their guidance and counseling programs through empirical means, and to implement the Texas and National models for school counseling programs.
CREST looks at the counseling program in five categories:
• Introduction to the School and the Role of the Professional School Counselor
• Program Implementation Cycle
• Foundational Components
• Four Service Delivery Components
• Program Curriculum
The counseling team prepares a digital submission that highlights these areas and communicates just what the counseling program is doing to help students succeed. These are sent to reviewers throughout the state of Texas to be judged according to pre-set standards of excellence.
Congratulations to Dumas Intermediate School for being one of an elite group of schools from across the state to win the CREST Award for Counseling Excellence for 2023-2024.
Conduct a needs assessment.
Organize a campus based advisory committee.
Use program goals to drive services.
Nurture relationships to support implementation.
Serve students through the four service delivery components of the Texas Model
Ensure delivery of guidance scope & sequence
Leverage specialized skills to assist teachers, staff, and parents.
Optimize efforts to create a positive school climate.
Review the program to assess effectiveness-

5th Grade Girls Spinal Screenings

Dumas Intermediate School will do spinal screening on February 2, 2024. State law requires that schools must screen students for abnormal spinal curvature in accordance with the following schedule:
Girls will be screened two times, once at age 10 (grade 5) and again at age 12 (grade 7)
Trained screeners (school nurses) will check you child for signs of spinal problem like scoliosis. Catching a spinal problem early can make the treatment much easier. Not treating spinal problems can lead to serious health problems.
The screening is simple. Screeners will look at your child’s back while she stands and bends forward.
Important Recommendations
Girls should wear a thin T-shirt or a sports bra or a two piece swimsuit top underneath their shirt on exam day.
Girls will remove their shirts during the screening process.
The school will send you a letter if your child does not pass the screening. The letter will tell you how to follow up with at doctor.
This screening is not a medical exam. Your child still needs to see a doctor for check ups.
If you do not wish to have your child screened for religious reasons, you must submit and exemption to the school no later than February 1, 2024
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Lisa West RN
